Flautas are a kind of crunchy tacos that belong to the long list of traditional Mexican Street Food. Flautas definitely mean Fiesta! and 5 de mayo is time for Fiesta! These Chicken Flautas with avocado salsa are going to become one of your favorite meals. Flautas are traditionally made with corn tortillas. They are deep-fried in oil but I will teach you how to make them in the air fryer. Flautas recipe can definitely become many recipes with the same recipe! you can make flautas de Pollo, flautas filled with cheese, flautas filled with beef, or even with mashed potatoes. Flautas are gluten-free! Chicken flautas are really easy and fast to make and I am also sharing with you one of my favorite avocado salsas for flautas. This avocado salsa can be used for tacos, flautas, or even as a dressing for your salad! it is creamy with a smooth texture and all the Mexican flavor of jalapeño and serrano pepper.

    Air fryer flautas with sauce

This Mexican recipe for Cinco de Mayo is one of my son’s favorites. I once asked Jorge Daniel (at that time 5 years old) What would you like to do when you grow up? I want to be a dad, he answered. I told him, well you will need to have a profession so you can support your many kids, and he said… Oh! I will sale tacos de pollo.

Well, we have another entrepreneur in the family! LOL, any kind of tortilla filled with chicken is my son’s favorite meal and these chicken flautas are not the exemption. The best flautas I have had were the ones they use to sell during the recreo (lunch break) at the middle school cafeteria. Making flautas is very easy and the best part is that we are going to prepare them in a healthy way. Traditional chicken flautas are fried in tons of oil until getting a crunchy texture. That calls for tons of fat in the arteries!

One of my goals in making the Mexican food I grew up with is to make some twists so they can be as deliciosas as the traditional recipes but cooked in a healthier way. Today we will be using the air fryer to get the crunchiness without all the fat. Flautas can also be baked. It takes a little longer but you can still get the crunchiness without the deep fried.

    Mexican Flautas recipe

How to make Chicken Flautas de Pollo

1- The first step is to cook the chicken. Set a pot with boiling water and add 1 o 2 garlic cloves, 1 teaspoon of salt, and a small bunch of cilantro. Put the chicken to cook in that water for about 25 minutes. I usually use chicken breast to make the flautas but if you don’t have enough time just shred a roasted chicken from the supermarket.

2- Warm up the tortillas to soften them.

3-Use an oil spray and spray one of the sizes of the tortillas. I usually have olive or avocado oil in spray but you can use any kind of cooking oil.

4- Set some of the shredded on the end of the tortilla and start rolling as if it is a burrito.

5- Place the flautas on the air fryer with the end of the tortilla facing under so it can help you to keep it hold. make sure that you leave some space between each flauta so the hot air from the air fryer can circulate and really create delicious crunchiness.

6- The cooking time will vary depending on the brand of your air fryer. I have an Instant Pot and set it at 360 f for 13 minutes. I turned it on and left the flautas to cook for about 4 minutes, after that, I rolled them up to the other side and left the cook for another 2 minutes. You can just check every 3 minutes to see if they are already crunchy.

7- Serve with some lettuce underneath and cover with Mexican cream, avocado salsa, and pico de gallo!! Delicioso!

WHAT INGREDIENTS DO I NEED TO MAKE FLAUTAS MEXICANAS

    • 1 chicken breast (you can use a roasted chicken from the super market)
    • 1 garlic cloves
    • 1 teaspoon of salt
    • 1 bunchs of cilantro
    • ¼ of an onion
    • Tortillas
    • Spray oil (olive, avocado)

*One chicken breast make about 18 flautas. Each person might eat about 3 flautas.

    Optional extra ingredients

Lettuce, tomato, extra onion for make a pico de gallo to put on top.

    CREAMY AVOCADO SALSA FOR FLAUTAS

This is one of my favorite salsas as all the ingredients are used raw what makes it very easy and fast to make. The creamy texture of this salsa makes it perfect to go with vegetables so I have used it too as a dip or even as an avocado salad dressing.

    avocado salsa ingredients

    INGREDIENTS

    • 1 garlic clove
    • 1 chile serrano
    • 1 bunch of cilantro
    • 1 chile jalapeno
    • 1 avocado
    • 1 cup of milk (can be almond or coconut)
    • salt to taste
    avocado sauce

    How to make aguacate salsa!

    • Just place all the ingredients in the blender starting with the milk.
    • Blend until liquify and serve! a trick in here in order to do not have a black avocado salsa is the milk. cow milk has an enzyme that prevents the avocado from turning black.
    • I have seen many recipes that add lime to the avocado.. which I hate! I just feel that avocado has such a soft and delicious flavor that gets ruined by lime.

Remember that you can use this same recipe step by step to make all the different kinds of flautas. Along with flautas de pollo, flautas filled with shredded beef, cheese, and even mashed potatoes are very popular.
